EPISODE 11 - Career: Is my Job in danger cause of AI or Automation
Show notes
Summary
In this episode, Michael Seidl discusses whether jobs are in danger due to AI and automation. He explains that while automation can help reduce workload and improve efficiency, it depends on the mindset of individuals. If someone is still doing low-level tasks that can easily be automated, their job may be at risk. Michael provides examples of tasks that can be automated, such as checking expired dates of certificates and generating marketing phrases. He emphasizes the importance of evolving and taking on more complex tasks to ensure job security. Additionally, he highlights the upcoming retirement of the baby boomer generation as a reason to start implementing automation and AI now.

Michael Seidl: Welcome to a new episode of the Get Shit Done in IT podcast. My name is Michael Seidel and today the topic is, my job in danger because of AI or automation? So the short answer is, it depends, maybe. So let's dive into that topic a bit more. So I'm doing automation or IT process automation since I think more than 15 years from now on and never seen anyone got fired or his job was canceled in case of my automation. Because usually companies or people or departments are happy to have some automation, some help to reduce the workload. and someone to automate their tasks so they can focus on different stuff. And that's the maybe. If you are someone who is still doing very low things and stick on that, but could be easily done with automation or AI, then it might happen that your job is definitely in danger. So for example, if you still, I don't know, start a service if an alert occurs in your system, or if you still manually check any expired date of certificates or Asia app registrations, for example. So I did a recent blog post about partial script to get all the expired date of your secrets or certificates. And that's executed automatically in Azure Automation. And it's done in seconds. And you get an email if something is expiring. So you don't need someone who's checking that. You don't need someone to write the Excel or something or do a calendar entry. So if you have someone who is stick to that, there might be no chance that a customer or an employee or employer will
Michael Seidl: pay you for that because it's easier and better and more efficient to automate those things instead of hiring someone doing that stuff manually. So the answer is it depends on your mindset. If you take the advantage of AI or automation to do those kinds of things and tasks and use that safe time to evolve yourself, to evolve your department, to evolve your IT, your environment, to just do something more highly needed or highly requested. Then there will be a lot of employees, employers and customers that will pay you for those things, but no one will pay you in the future for doing manual things you can do with AI or automation. Different example is a business leader I talked a few months ago from a marketing agency. So before AI started one and half year ago, usually when a new campaign is rolling up, someone needs to sit down in the room for a day or more and just get some sentence, marketing words, some phrases, whatever. And today you write your prompt, you've put that prompt in JetGPT or any other AI tool and you get 10, 15, 20, whatever, how many you like, ideas and phrases and sentences you can work with. So you don't need someone who is sitting a day. a week or a few days, whatever, in a silent room and think about, you just need to enter a prompt in chat GPT and you get a lot of response and lot of suggestions within a few seconds. So, and with those things, you have to continue your work. It's not finished here, but you don't need those days before to get those ideas. And if you still stick on
Michael Seidl: part to get the ideas. This is definitely something what will not very highly requested in the near future because there is there are tools to do that stuff. You then take that output and do the how to say the fine work, the adjustments, the minor adjustments to those output from JetGPT. But the first Nobody needs anyone to do that things. So keep in mind that your mindset is important on that thing. And if you just evolve and take the next steps and don't do those easy things, there will be a lot of requests for you in the future. But if you still stick on those basic stuff, I don't think there will be an employee or a customer who will pay you for that. And especially when it comes to automation or AI. And now it might be a bit of a boring topic, but I prepared a keynote one year ago about mindset and automation and stuff. something came in my mind and I checked this in several government platforms and there there was or there is the so called baby boomer generation so 40, around 40, 50 years ago the birth rate was very high and those people are now in the age to retire so in the next 5 to 10 years those many people, a lot of people will retire because that's the famous baby boomer generation and those people will retire and that means those people are not available anymore to work to do your work to do any work because they are retired okay and that's right now the right time and don't wait too long to start with automation
Michael Seidl: to start with artificial intelligence, so AI. Because if you're responsible for a team or for employers or for other people or whatever, you have to make sure that you bring your workload to AI or a lot of work will be done by automation because the baby BOOMer generation will retire very soon so you will lose a lot of workload, lot of people in your environment to deploy the work. you don't have those manpower anymore to get your work done. So make sure you start right now to give those low level things to AI. to automation and to give the rest of your workforce the possibility to train with those things, to learn those things and to evolve to different tasks and not those easy ones anymore. So that's the very important thing. once again, if your mindset is right and if you do not stick to any low level tasks, There is no need to be afraid that your job is in danger. But if you stick on those easy things and so on, in my opinion, there will be no future for you that you get paid for those tasks because there a lot of tools doing it better, doing it faster and doing it cheaper. Okay. So make sure your mindset is right and that you evolve and take the next steps and do not doing those low level things anymore. Okay, so that's for this week. If you have any questions, I really happy to answer your questions in the next episode of this podcast. So the easiest way would be write me on LinkedIn or send me a voice message on LinkedIn with your question so I can answer or I can try to answer this in the next episode. And
Michael Seidl: So we're finished for now. Thank you very much for listening to the podcast. Enjoy a week, stay productive and bye
